Our learners recently had the privilege of attending a captivating lecture on Animal Breeding and Genetics by Dr. Japie van der Westhuizen, whose achievements in the field have shaped research across South Africa. His passion for science inspired students to see the exciting possibilities in genetics. Adding to the spirit of discovery, Liam demonstrated a creative chemistry experiment using red cabbage as a natural indicator — turning everyday ingredients into a colourful exploration of acids and alkalis. Together, these experiences highlight how curiosity and creativity can spark a deeper love for science in our classrooms.

With a PhD in the field and a long list of contributions to genetic evaluations for farm animals in South Africa, Dr. van der Westhuizen shared his knowledge and experience in an engaging and inspiring session.

In recognition of his work, he received the South African Society for Animal Science Silver Medal in 2006
